Author: Tom PiccirilliAfter returning to his dorm room after winter break Cal Prentiss discovers that a young, nameless woman was killed on his very bed. He quickly becomes obsessed with finding out about her murder-and soon becomes involved with the darker aspects of his college campus.Cal is very much in touch with his darker self, imagining (or not?) ghosts speaking with him, and quick to (over)react to the events about him. His grades are very poor and he suspects that his relationship with girlfriend Jodi is about to end, which also adds to his anxiety. When he's invited to a secret party attended by the University faculty and select students, he finds out how far people are willing to go to 'fit in' or obtain their dreams. Not only is his girlfriend unfaithful to him, he sees her being screwed by the Dean himself. You see, she wants the good grades in order to go to medical school-and the faculty have full determination over grades and success.Cal is unwilling to buckle under peer pressure and be conformed by the forces around him, so he rebels in the only way he knows how. But is that exactly what this odd cult wants him to do?THE NIGHT CLASS is a surreal, nightmarish journey into the mind of a half-crazy college student. It reminded me of ANGEL HEART crossed with the fifth season of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. A well-deserved winner of the 2002 Bram Stoker award for best novel.
