Published by Leisure Books two years after his death, the 'new' Richard Laymon book is exactly what you expect from the author-a no holds barred page-turner with twisted characters and situations. The first three-quarters of the book bounce back and forth between two seemingly unrelated stories. One is about a woman who has the strange compulsion to break into people's homes and live there while they're out of town. When it turns out that the house she picked belongs to a vicious serial-killer things take a turn for the worst. The other story concerns a couple who decide to go on vacation in the Sierras although the guy had an extremely bad childhood experience on a camping trip. Then, they start encountering some potentially dangerous people and situations, cultimating with a psychotic mountain man who wants to feed them to his 'pet' mountain lions. These two stories eventually converge but not quite in the way you think they will. And as with almost all of Laymon's work (except QUAKE, which I really didn't like) you get a read that sticks with you for a while. Sticks you in the gut!
