This graphic novel takes place hundreds of years in the future during a new Ice Age. The story begins with a boy and a girl, Pak and Schuyler, who are out hunting on the ice. They encounter a white tiger, but before it can get them a Skinrunner shows up. He's sort of a warrior/mystic riding a white buffalo. He stops the tiger in its tracks which gives Pak enough time to shoot it in the heart with is crossbow.
They all go back to the village at the Santa Monica ice shelves. It's an "Outcast" village led by Pak's mother. The Skinrunner has come here because he's old and is looking for an apprentice to pass on his knowledge before he dies--and he has his eye on Pak. But his mother says no and so the Skinrunner leaves.
When Pak's mother makes a trip to Lost Angeles, twenty-miles away, Paks sneaks aboard one of the dog sleds and gets in trouble with that city's cruel leader, Slaugtherhouse Joe. Joe suspects that the Outcast village has a supply of oil and wants it for his own city. So he sends his troops out and kills the inhabitants.
But Pak survives and encounters the old Skinrunner again. Years pass as his apprentice until the day comes when he becomes the new Skinrunner and goes by the name Achilles. He goes back to Lost Angeles to deal with his unresolved issues with Slaughterhouse Joe and discovers that his childhood friend, Schuyler, is still alive. In fact, Joe has been raising her as his daughter all these years and she has no memory of her past.
Will Achilles get his revenge? Will he get the girl? And will humanity survive this new Ice Age?
I love post-apocalyptic stories so NORTHWIND, which presents an all too plausible future, was right up my alley. Best of all, this ice age epic is a fun read.
