Take a Kurt Vonnegut novel and cross it with THE STAND by Stephen King and you get the general idea of this crazy - and effective - novel.
The story centers around anthropologist/teacher Hank Hannah. One of his students discovers a prehistoric spear point - and he goes to unearth this ancient grave, with dire consequences for humanity. It explains why the Clovis people basically disappeared overnight - due to a plague. Now, he and the few survivors must travel across a frozen wasteland dotted with thousands of corpses and avoid packs of wild dogs to find safety.
The book starts off humorous and then turns very dire, yet it works, something difficult to pull off.
