In a world overrun by zombie media it's refreshing to read a book that's actually different than the typical living cadaver tale. It's six months after zombies have taken over the world and there are survivors living in an apartment building in Manhattan. They've been barricaded in and have slowly eaten up all their food so they are all starving to death. There's a wide range of people, from the elderly Jewish couple to the artist to the African-American to the homosexuals and the rednecks. They can't venture out in search of food because the thousands, if not millions, of zombies will devour them. So they are basically waiting to die. That is until they see a young woman walking freely amidst the reanimated corpses. This is Mona. For some reason the zombies have an aversion to her. They scramble out of her way. The inhabitants of the building befriend her and she agrees to go out and get them food and supplies on a regular basis. But some of the residents think she's keeping information from them--such as to how/why she's immune to the undead--and that's when the trouble starts...
As with Robert Kirkman's THE WALKING DEAD graphic novel, the zombies here and the world they've taken over is simply the backdrop. What makes things interesting are the quirky characters and how they deal with their deadly situation. I enjoyed this horror novel as much as I did Fingerman's first novel, BOTTOM FEEDER. Highly recommended.
