It's a month after the flood that swept through Ape City after the moon exploded. Cornelius and other chimps are trying to salvage what's left of the Chimpanzee history museum but the gorillas want to tear down the place before they can do so. Cornelius asks Zaius to halt the work---and when the orangutan sees a strange sculpture of a human, he agrees to postpone the demolition for a week. Then, Vitus, his son-in-law returns to town and asks about his wife and child. Zaius has to break the news to him that his bride did not survive. He decides to stay and raise the baby. Meanwhile. Zaius goes and visits Dr. Milo, who is imprisoned at "The Reef", the ape prison. He says he'll commute his sentence if he goes to painted valley, where that sculpture originates. However, Zaius also sends Vitus as the leader, telling him that he needs to lead an expedition there that will bring back food to Ape City. Once there, they encounter a thing that looks like a huge werewolf. Half the expedition is killed--and Cornelius and Milo discover that apes are living and farming valley. This issue does open up the series a bit, as we know there are other Ape communities--and it gives a backstory to the characters in the original movies. Recommended.
