This POTA four issue story are issues #14-18 of Adventure Comic's POTA run from the early 90's. It begins with three astronauts who have returned from Mars—August Anne Burrows, Captain James Norvell and Lt. Ken Flip. They find a world in ruins and devoid of people. One of the guys thinks it's because of nuclear war. And there's bickering among them since one of them doesn't see the point of going on, that it's "the end of everything". However, August keeps them on track and eventually they come across a group of intelligent gorillas led by a blind ape named Zar. The apes pursue them and they flee. They do find out, from recorded newscasts, that there was an ape rebellion and that the same virus that killed off all the apes and dogs (as in CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) also killed most of the people. August feels sorry for the Lieutenant because he has a harder time, both physically and emotionally, but he becomes obsessed with her, especially when she ends their sex and she starts up with the Captain. There's more fighting, which leaves her as the only survivor. She treks out on her own, now pregnant, and makes it to the ocean, where she finds shelter in a cave. In the last few panels she picks up a doll that says "Mama" and steps out from the entrance to the cave—and it turns out it's the same cave Cornelius was excavating at the end of PLANET OF THE APES.
Overall, the story is decent, but the dialogue is often trite and lame, and the black and white artwork varies. As with all the Adventure Comic Apes titles, the simians look quite different than how portrayed in the films. Still, if you're a POTA fan, you'll dig this "missing piece" in the continuity.
