This is a prequel to the Tim Burton directed Apes movie, which takes place twelve years before Leo Davidson crash-lands on the planet. Daena (that potential love-interest that never panned out) and her family (portrayed by Linda Hamilton and Chris Kristofferson in the movie) are the focus here.
The ape soldiers are becoming more aggressive towards the hundreds of humans that live around Ape City - and many are starting to be kept as slave's. Sarai, Daena's mother, is a leader of one of the human tribes and she believes it's possible for ape and human to live peacefully together. Her ally is Ari, a female chimp who is an advocate for human rights. We're also introduced to Colonel Thade and Ari's friend, Attar.
Although written for a younger audience (9-15), this is a decent Ape's novel that captures the 'POTA feel'and fits well as a precursor to the newer movie.
