In this continuation of the Planet of the Apes story from Boom!, which is about humans and apes living 500 years after Caesar, in the City of Mak, begins with former leader Alaya (a chimp) about to be assassinated. Then, it goes years into the future where her adopted human son, Julian, is an adult, and camping out in the Empty lands. He's attacked by feral humans, who cannot speak--they don't even know how to sign. We get the idea that something terrible happened to the city. Back in the past, when Julian is a child, two of the hairless robed human mutants teach him that humans are just another type of animal. The mutants are the ones who are manipulating events and as they speak, Sullivan (who is the biological mother of the boy Julian) rushes in and saves Alaya from the axe. She proposes that they split rule of the city, to keep the peace. Meanwhile, the chimp Hulss rushes back to the city, bearing news that the Golden Army (which is led by a hairless gorilla) is coming to invade them. But he's knocked out by humans, who send him off with the other prisoners. He does relay his information to Sullivan and Alaya--and they both agree they can't surrender to The Golden Army because they have no idea what they'll do to the citizens of Mak. The last scene is of them opening the gates of the city and awaiting their arrival...
This is a much faster pace than the regular series was and definitely sets the groundwork for the first POTA movie....
