RED AXE OF PELLUCIDAR (1977) Author: John Eric HolmesThis unpublished sequel to Holme's MAHARS OF PELLUCIDAR (which is a continuation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels) continues that tale of Christopher West and his adventures in Pellucidar, that timeless world which exists inside the Hollow Earth. After making his escape from the city of the Mahars, intelligent Pterodactyls, he's accompanied by Varna, his cavewoman, Elkar, a former slave, Mooh-lah, a fur covered man with a monkey tail, and Zeda Mahar scientist who has befriended them. Their adventures include encountering a Polynesian-descended tribe which sacrifices its people to a giant sea anemone, fleeing from a band of Mammoth riders and encountering the usual prehistoric dinosaurs and beasts. I thought the most interesting thing were how the Dimetrodons, or 'Sail-back dinosaurs' were portrayed. In a chapter where they are out at sea, these creatures are like living sailboats, using their sails to steer themselves towards their prey. This was a quick, easy read and fits well with the mythology established by Burroughs in the AT THE EARTH'S CORE books. Too bad this additional series didn't continue...
