This sequel to RED THUNDER, about the first spaceflight to Mars, takes place about twenty-five years after the events of the first novel (the first spaceflight to Mars) and concerns Ray Garcia-Strickland, the son of Manny, who was one of the first people to set foot on The Red Planet. Ray's father is the manager of The Red Thunder, a high-end hotel, catering to the tourist trade that is Mar's livelihood. When an unknown object strikes the Earth, causing a massive Tsunami to inundate most of Florida, the family sets off in search of the grandmother, who lived on the Coast. They come across death and destruction on a massive scale on their quest. It also turns out that Jubal, the genius who invented the revolutionary propulsion system that makes space flight possible, may be responsible for this disaster.
RED LIGHTNING is completely different than the first novel, which I liked because it satisfies my one pre-quesite for a sequel, namely not repeating itself. While not quite the page turner of the first book, it sets up an interesting storyline that makes me anticipate a likely third novel.
