This volume collects the first 18 issues of Dynamite's new Red Sonja series.
The story begins with Red Sonja arriving at a city, attacked by the guards and then imprisoned in the dungeons where she has to fight a caveman to the death. The supernatural enemy here is The Celestian, which seems to have it in for her. A few issues in she meets Osin, a big blonde Viking type who is a bit more laid back than Conan. He clearly wants her--but in order to do that he has to beat her in battle. He half-heartedly tries and she puts him in his place. They become traveling companions the end of the book. One of her other threats is this red-eyed guy who wears a wolfshead and she encounters him several times. The bigger threat, though, the Celestial, culminates when he is born in flesh and rips his way out of his evil mother. He quickly grows to adulthood and leads his armies to capture her. I found the most interesting parts to be Sonja's origin story, which is told in a series of flashbacks. As a child she was raped and nearly killed and a Goddess in white appeared to her. She gets much of her ability from abstaining from having sex with men. There's also a humorous reason given as to why she wears that skimpy body armor.
This is definitely a comic for "mature audiences" as there's plenty of gore, from slaughtering possessed kids to beheadings and intestines graphically ripped out.
Definitely check this out--you have never seen this barbarian look so good.
