This is a sequel, more or less, to WAR OF THE WORLDS. The first part of the graphic novel briefly shows the first invasion of the tripods, with them falling ill, presumably from Earth's bacteria. But that may not be the real reason...
Miles is the main character, a nerdy guy having problems with his marriage. When the second attack happens he tells his wife to stay in the basement of the house while he goes to get the car-- but the house--and his wife--are blown to bits, something he feels very responsible for. He keeps on having nightmares and flashbacks about her throughout the rest of the story.
He meets up with longtime friend Duke and the two of them try to find some sort of safe haven and meet with survivors along the way. The one thing they find out is that the aliens aren't the only danger-- the country is rapidly breaking up into lawlessness. In fact, when they get to one town to get insulin for one of their group, the local sheriff tries to chop off their heads with an axe. Yes, the alien attacks are horrifying but so are some of the people and that's where SECOND WAVE is most interesting.
I like this book. It's faithful to H.G. Wells as well as the Spielberg WAR OF THE WORLDS movie and takes it in a slightly unexpected direction. Will there be a THIRD WAVE?
