Author: F. Paul Wilson
In the near future society has a new work force - chimpanzees modified with human DNA, who have less hair, walk upright and can speak. Rather than being sold like slaves, they are leased by the company that created them, SimGen. They are also clones of each other and are sterile - or so everyone thinks until one of these Sims is impregnated by a human.
SimGen has a secret is doesn't want found out - and will go to any lengths to keep it from public knowledge. When a lawyer named Sullivan is approached by an old Sim to help the Sims working at a golf course to form a union, the trouble begins. The lawyer is discouraged from pursuing this - and is even fired from the law office where he works. He's then approached by an animal activist and the leader of those wanting to free the Sims.
This reminded me of a PLANET OF THE APES movie and pretty much works in that mode. I was able to guess the 'big surprise' at the end about halfway through the book, but it was still entertaining.
