This novel, originally printed in 1978, is an original tale of Moonbase Alpha that takes place during the first year of their voyage. What they first take for an alien spacecraft is on a collision course with the base and they have to deflect it with a nuclear missile. On board is a ferocious insect-like monster, which ends up killing five crewmen before it's destroyed. It also turns out that the 'spaceship' is really some type of alien pod and that the odd, ball like things it contains are seeds. They plant them in the new section of the hydroponics garden and one develops into a sort of tree which then gives birth to a very human looking woman. She just looks human, though-she doesn't have a skeleton and is made up of the same substance the plant was. With the use of pheromones she's able to quickly get the men under her control, including Commander Koenig. Does she want to take over the base? And what will she do in order to survive? The ending is somewhat surprising. Author E.C. Tubb (who penned all the novelizations of the series) comes up with an interesting installment to the mythos.
