I've always been curious about this Marvel title so when I found a copy for a few bucks I figured what the heck. The premise is that Peter Parker and Mary Jane got married and now have a fifteen year-old daughter, May. Like her father she's a straight-A student, though she also has some athletic ability and plays on the basketball team. Then, here spider powers kick in. Her parents don't want her putting herself in danger, especially Peter, who had lost a leg and retired from the costume when May was a few years old.
But she finds this exciting and so sneaks out at night. Of course, the first villain she encounters is the Green Goblin, who is the grandson of the original. He wants to kill her father so she has to stop him. Then, it's a crazy guy named Crazy Eights. And for her first team-up, it's with the Fantastic Five, who include the original members, Johnny Storm and Thing, along with Franklin Richards, Ms. Fantastic (Lyja Storm, Johnny's wife) and Big Brain (which is Reed Richards after his body was destroyed in a battle years ago). Another super villain, a school janitor who transforms into a dragon-like creature, nearly kills her friends but luckily she's able to prevent it. And when Venom escapes after ten years in a maximum security prison, he goes right for Peter Parker and takes him over, so that Spider Girl has to go up against her old man.
I do dig these alternate universe tales, since they can basically do anything they want with already established characters. Basically, these are just like the early original Spiderman stories only a bit more upbeat, since she doesn't have the guilt or baggage of feeling responsible for the death of an uncle. This volume collects the first six issues of the series.
