I recently re-read this excellent sci-fi novel by Alan Dead Foster. It was the first 'follow-up' to STAR WARS to come out as a novel---spawning the current Lucas publication empire.Picking up shortly after Luke Skywalker blows up the Death Star, we find ourselves with Luke, Leai, R2D2, and C3PIO on the way to a planet to persuade them to the Rebel cause.Leai's Y-Wing fighter has problems, though, and nearly crashes on a strange planet. Luke follows and also barely gets out of his X-Wing fighter intact...Stranded on a strange planet and trying to find a beacon that indicated a landing site, they find themselves fighting the Evil Empire (who is hiding there) and searching for a magic diamond-like jewel that can control the Force if it used by someone powerful enough. Luke realizes that they must find this magical item before the Evil Emperor does...This is still a fun read and the budding romance between Luke and Leai is hilarious (this was before the plot twist was revealed that they were brother and sister in the movies. Foster nails down their actions and the Droids' interaction pretty well...When Darth Vader comes calling for the jewel, Luke and Leia must face him again! A highlight is a lightsaber fight between Leai and Vader, that was really cool! There's also plenty of action and a nice sequence as our heroes struggle to get out of an underground lair inhabitated by wild aliens.SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE is a great rainy day read for sci-fi and STAR WARS fans!
