This first book of this new epic series ties together characters from all four television shows. The Borg, having been defeated by the Federation several times in the past, now have a new agenda. They don't want to assimilate--they want to outright destroy the Federation and conquer that part of space. There are four Starship crews. there's the Aventine, commanded by the newly promoted Ezri Dax, the Picard's the Enterprise, Will Riker's the Titan and, in a flashback story that ties to the future, the Columbia, captained by Erica Hernandez (from Star Trek: Enterprise).
The Aventine finds the crashed Columbia on a planet in the distant Gamma Quadrant and as they try to figure out how it got there it's explained what happened to the Columbia crew. Picard is getting all worked up about the Borg, as he has a psychic connection to them left over from when he was the Borg Locutus. Riker and his wife, Deanna Troi, are having marriage difficulties. She is pregnant but the pregnancy has gone wrong and the baby will ultimately die, no matter what.
This is an interesting Star Trek book in that it's so grim and things are done with the characters that would've never happened on Tv or the films. Recommended.
