This ongoing series from IDW ontinues adventure of Captain Kirk and crew from the JJ Abrams redux, revisiting stories that were presented in the original series. These first two issues adapt the teleplay "Where No Man Has Gone Before". It's a few months after the events of the first movie and Kirk has given some posts to his friends from the Academy, such as Gary Mitchell and Kelso. They get a distress signal from an old Starfleet vessel, the Valiant, which has been missing for two hundred years. They end up crossing over the edge of the galaxy, which consists of a strange energy barrier. It affects Mitchell and gives him increased psychic abilities.
While this basically follows the original script, there are some major differences, mainly with Elizabeth Dehner not being on board. It's made clear that she and McCoy had a past fling-and she transferred off the ship prior to this adventure. So it's just Gary Mitchell as the threat. The ship and characters also resemble the actors from the new movie, so that also adds a different feel to the story. Still, this is all very cool, seeing these "alternate timeline" stories. Recommended.
