This five-part comic series from IDW presents the last adventure of the Enterprise's five year mission before the crew disbands and Kirk becomes an Admiral, leading to the events of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE.
The ship is sent to Archernar IV, to sign up a new alien species to the Federation. These aliens inhabit an artificially made world that was constructed thousands of years ago, by giants, and the sentient species evolved from spiders that were on board. However, complications arise when it seems that they are not longer the only intelligent species. The caterpillar like insects the spiders use as beasts of burden can communicate and even kidnap a landing party. When the power source of the ship/planet is stolen, a power source that can destroy this section of space, the stakes become higher. The green skinned Orions are also involved.
This series has the feel of STAR TREK: THE ANIMATED series and we even see Arex and M'ress as part of the crew. It also gives a good reason why McCoy chooses to retire from Starfleet and Spock goes on to pursue the Kolinahr, as it directly ties into this story.
