This book consists of three novellas, "What if?" stories that take place in the Star Trek Universe.
The first story, and the best, CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, presents a Star Trek Universe in which Spock was killed as a child (the story was told in the animated series YESTERYEAR episode). Kirk's first officer ends up being an Andorian who does his job well but he isn't Spock. David Marcus ends up surviving the events depicted in the movie THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK because they aren't searching for Spock and Earth is decimated by the Probe in THE VOYAGE HOME because Spock isn't there to figure out that it needs to hear whale song in order to go away. So the Enterprise crew doesn't go back in time to bring a whale back and save the planet. However, Dr. David Marcus may be able to save the Earth with his Genesis device...
In A GUTTED WORLD the Federation is at war with the Klingons, Romulans and Cardassians and it's because of the Founders of the Dominion who have infiltrated all the governments, making them fight each other so it will be easy for them to take over. Riker has taken command of his own vessel and Ro Laren is Picard's First Officer. A Bajoran named Kira Nerys has escaped Cardassian space with Odo and they convince the Federation what's going on...
In BRAVE NEW WORLD Data resurfaces after a fifteen year absence and reveals that he's been building a secret android society. He needs Picard's help when the Romulans find the planet and want to enslave the society. it's an intriguing story, particularly how it has become commonplace for people to "download" their consciousness into Android bodies.
