This novel takes place right after the events of THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. Kirk is retired and teaching at Starfleet Academy--and very bored. When he is contacted by his two young nephews (from brother George) to go on a trip to a planet they plan to colonize, he goes with them. Along for the ride are Checkov and Scotty. But there's a little bit more going on at the planet than what his nephews told him. In fact, the neighboring aliens are building mass weapons of destruction not too far away, a weapon that will make all dilithium crystals below 90% purity shatter, which will caused millions of deaths if ever implemented. Eventually Captain Spock and Dr.McCoy show up to lend a hand. A decent star trek book, though it seemed a bit too subdued to be 'the final adventure of the original crew'.
