The Enterprise is sent on a mission to investigate the Herans, a group of genetically altered humans who believe 'old humans' are far inferior. They plan to release a virus which will affect new born babies, making them identical in makeup to the Herans. But there's a resistance on Hera and these renegades help the Enterprise in stopping the virus. Basically, it uses the Eugenic's War as a springboard and why the Federation holds human genetic engineering in such fear. Although it somewhat contradicts Greg Cox's books THE EUGENICS WARS, there's always a lot of inconsistency with these Star Trek books. The best thing about the novel is that it introduces a new alien species, the Spider-like Pa'uyk, which you'd never see on any of the television series. This average Star Trek book was written by W.R. Thompson.
