In this, ZERO SUM GAME, the first of four new novels in the ST:TNG universe, the Typhon Pact has formed. It's the newest threat to the Federation and includes the Tholians, the Gorn, Breen and Romulans. Even though the Borg threat has been eliminated once and for all that war significantly weakened the Federation. A spy for the Pact steals plans for the newest technological breakthrough in space travel-- the slipstream drive--and are constructing a prototype. The mysterious Breen are the ones in charge of this. Dr. Julian Bashir, of Deep Space Nine, and fellow genetically engineered human Sarina Douglas are recruited as agents to steak or destroy this prototype before this new threat can use it. And it's because they are smarter and stronger than normal humans that they have a chance of doing this. They are disguised in Breen body armor, which has been adapted, and are dropped off near one of their colony worlds What they discover about the Breen, who were never shown out of armor on Star Trek, is unexpected and brilliant. The explanation of why they hide their identities and seemingly have so many contradictory aspects--such as room in the helmets for snouts or sub zero air conditioning units--is ingenious and makes complete sense. It is fascinating and I'm glad they finally got around to explaining this in a book.
Bashir is briefly reunited with former lover Ezri Dax, who he was stationed with on Deep Space Nine years ago. Now she is Captain of the U.S.S. Aventine. But Bashir's heart lies with Sarina and he'll do just about anything for the woman, including murder. However, he does not know what she's really up to and who she works for...
This is a great start to a new series and maintains the continuity of the original Star Trek Universe.
