In this third book of the four book series, ROUGH BEAST OF EMPIRE, the saga of the Romulan Empire continues. In the past few years, in the various novels, it has been established that the Romulan Empire has split in two. One of these factions is led by Donatra (seen in STAR TREK: NEMESIS), who has taken over several Romulan worlds and created the Imperial Romulan State. She wants relations with the Federation. However, Praetor Tal-aura of The Romulan Star Empire has joined the newly formed "Typhon Pact", which has set itself apart from the Federation. Caught between this power struggle is Spock, who is still working on Reunification, his goal to reunify the Vulcans and Romulans.
There's also a very different Benjamin Sisko, who has decided to rejoin Starfleet in the aftermath of the Borg Invasion. He has left his new wife and child and feels as if the "Prophets", those aliens in the wormhole, have abandoned him. He assumes command of a new ship and that poses additional problems since he's avoiding becoming personal with his crew.
This novel definitely has some major events, finally bringing to a conclusion the Romulan power-struggle, but it's a real bummer with some of your favorite Star Trek characters, particularly if you're a DEEP SPACE NINE fan.
