This third Draka novel by S.M. Stirling builds upon the characters and story from the previous two novels. Here, only two world powers exist-the Draka Domination, which encompasses all of Europe, Asia and Africa, and the Alliance, which is the U.S and South America. It's a race for the stars, with both entities establishing colonies on the moon, asteroid belt and Mars. The Draka, those 'racially elite' who have turned half the world into slaves, are also experimenting with genetics, trying to improve themselves, while the Alliance has the advantage with computer technology. As the 'Final War' nears the Alliance realizes that the only hope for humanity is establishing a colony in Alpha Centauri, so that they can one day defeat the Draka, who will probably not be human a few hundred years in the future. Parts of this book are just brutal and horrific and the alternate history is fascinating. It's a long read at 522 pages-but it's a page turner. Everything culminates in the fourth novel, DRAKON.
