Author: Eric Shapiro
The title of this novella refers to the main character, Ben Klein, who made his fortune selling his own brand of strawberries. It's a nickname he's a little ambivalent about at times. A strange storm occurs one night, which inundates the planet under hundreds of feet of water, and Ben finds himself stranded in a restaurant atop one of the world's tallest buildings. Along with him are a barkeeper and two waitresses.
As the water gets higher and they eventually have to move up to the roof, tensions grow and it's revealed that the Strawberry Man is a bit different than everyone - including himself - thought he'd be in this circumstance. Instead of the 'end of the world' bringing out the best in him it uncovers the worst. What's interesting is that author Eric Shapiro makes you relate to this guy, which is quite a feat.
I think the intro by author John Skipp is a little too hyper and over-does it a bit on the praise but then again I find Skipp irritating (mostly has to do with an encounter I had with the hobbit in person).
STRAWBERRY MAN is another great apocalyptic story by Shapiro, a good companion piece to IT'S ONLY TEMPORARY. You are guaranteed to sit down and read the 86 page novella in one sitting.
