Author: S.M. Stirling
Stirling newest book continues the epic begun in DIES THE FIRE, in which all technology ceases to function, catapulting the world back to Medieval technology. Rudi Mackenzie, son of two of the most important people in this new society, is now an adult and will one day assume leadership over his people. When a mysterious traveler arrives from the East it's determined that Rudi must go back with him. The stranger had visited the island of Nantucket, the source of "The Change", and in a vision he was sent to bring back "The Sword of the Lady". This is Rudi, the son of the High Priestess.
So he and his companions follow this traveler back across the changed country, trying to avoid the armies of a fanatical leader who suspects who Rudi is.
This book is the best, so far, of the entire series, primarily because author Stirling opens it up beyond the lands of Oregon and creates a plausible, apocalyptic world. I like how its also starting to tie in with his other series, in which the island of Nantucket was sent thousands of years back into the past (the flipside of what is happening here).
