This Elseworld's story deftly combines the H.G. Wells classic with that of Superman.
Clark Kent goes to the Daily Star in search of work and meets Lois Lane for the first time. Editor Perry White gives him a shot, to cover the report of a meteor that has crashed nearby. Lois is pissed, since she's tired of churning out the "Miss Lonleylove" column and wants a real reporting job. So she and Clark go there together--and witness the tentacled Martian exit the craft. Some of the people go out to greet it with a white flag but they are incinerated. Fortunately, Clark covers Lois from the flames with his body and saves her life. This also reveals his identity as Superman to her, since he was wearing the costume under his burnt off civilian clothes. Superman helps the Army try to defeat them but is captured--and within one of the crafts finds that Lex Luthor is helping them. This is the 1930's version of Superman, who can run as fast as a train and leap over tall building, not fly, in a single bound. So the alien threat is much more dangerous to him.
