This new graphic novel tells of the events that led directly prior to the first episode of the very first season of the show, which also ties into the very last season. This is when Sam leaves his brother and father. In New York City he befriends a young woman who lives under the streets in the subways. Her community is under a plague hex and he tries to help, ultimately defeating the weird creature responsible for turning people into zombies. Then it's off to a weird tale of beheading in a museum. There's also vampires and a former hunter who wants to frame the father for some murders. In fact, he may have made a deal with the yellow eyed demon that they've been after, the demon who killed the brother's mother all those years ago. All through this Sam and his dad are at odds with each other, exemplified when they draw guns over a hot dog. A hot dog!
Towards the end of the story the demon has a one-on-one conversation with Sam, alluding to what will happen to him years later--and even possesses him when the father kills the demon host's body. We also get a glimpse of Dean's death by the hellhounds. It ends with an angry Sam leaving for college and Dean left the keys to the car after his father disappears.
I enjoyed this graphic novel better than the previous one because the writers were able to draw a lot more on what's been established through the series in this prequel. On the downside, it's another one of those comic adaptations where the drawn characters don't look at all like the actors from the show, which probably has to do with likeness rights and all of that. Still, if you're a fan then you'll definitely want to check this book out.
