Ten years ago "The Affliction" raged across the world, killing billions. The only kids born since then are a bit different, a new breed of animal/human hybrids. Gus, who has antlers like a deer, is one such child. He has been raised in isolation in a cabin in the woods, his only other companion his sick, dying father. His father has taught him that the land beyond the trees is hell and that he'll die if he goes there. So he's never ventured beyond their property. But then his father dies, leaving him utterly alone for the first time in his life. Months later some human hunters arrive and take a shot at him. Before they can kill him another guy shows up and stops them. This is Jepperd. His motives for helping the boy aren't all that clear at first, though it becomes evident by the end of the end of this book.
Jepperd tells Gus that he'll take him to a safe sanctuary called The Preserve and Gus agrees to leave his home. They encounter a lot of dangerous situations, including tribes of people dressed like animals. And people doing whatever they can to survive in this hostile world.
SWEET TOOTH is an interesting book with a unique twist to the apocalyptic tale. It
vaguely brought to mind the second season of DARK ANGEL with all the transgenic creatures like the dog boy. Recommended.
