This takes place before the first James Cameron movie, with the focus on Kyle Reese and his friends, Paige and Ben, right before he decides to make the trip back to the past to save the life of Sarah Connor. One night when they are sleeping down in their bunker Kyle shows Ben that photograph of Sarah Connor. Ben thinks it's really weird that John Connor gave him that picture and comments "He gave you a picture of his Mom? That's the creepiest thing I've ever heard."
The majority of the story focuses on the friends, who clearly have feelings for each other. But this is interrupted by the appearance of the new type of Terminators, who have flesh covering their robotic endoskeleton. Also, a time travel twist happens when Kyle breaks into a Terminator facility and rescues a very old--and yet strangely familiar--old man. Later, this old man tells Ben that he's Kyle Reese, which of course elicits a surprised reaction. He talks about being sent back in time, to 1984, to save Sarah Connor--but the last thing he remembers is running from the cybernetic killer in a factory. Then nothing except being back in the future in his elder state. Kyle wants to go back to make sure he saves Sarah, but Ben ends up going back in time when something absolutely terrible happens to his now girlfriend Paige.
What I like best about this three issue story arc is that it ignores all previous TERMINATOR prequels and sequels and only uses James Cameron's first movie as its source. Those past TERMINATOR stories that just involve only new characters always seem a bit extraneous to me. It looks like the next few issues will even re-write the events from the first Terminator film, which is cool. Recommended.
