A couple on vacation in Northern California hit something large and ape-like with their car. It quickly runs off but not before they get a good look at it. Curiosity piqued, they come back to that same area with a few friends to investigate and are told the local legends. The eventually make their way to a very secluded spot where two reclusive brothers live-and they have a secret. It seems that there are actually two of the creatures, a male and a female, and they are their siblings, throwbacks from prehistoric times. Or are they? The ending explaination reminded me of something touched upon in Michael Crichton's CONGO. The first part of the book was fine-but once they got to the brothers' house everything became convoluted. Not to mention the rather stiff dialogue, though this may simply be due to the time period in which this was written, 43 years ago. Sort of like watching one of those B-MOVIES from the 50's like THE NEANDERTHAL MAN.
