This graphic novel collects issues #1-8 of the Time Travel hero, Rip Hunter, presenting him in a new way than he was in the 60's. Since he was a child he's been obsessed with time, which eventually led to his invention of the time sphere. But time has rules- time travel is a one way street. A person could use only one method of time travel. So if they went back to the past one way they'd have to use a different device in order to return. And once it was used they could never use it again. Helping Rick is Cave Carson, a woman love-interest and her trouble teenaged brother, a punk girl, a cousin and a fellow scientist. Hunter learns of a secret organization, the Illuminati, which has been influencing civilization through-the the centuries. Its leader is the immortal, Vandal Savage, who has been around since caveman times.
Throughout the issues there's trips to the dinosaur era, the Old West (with appearances by Jonah Hex and Tomahawk), Colonial America, the Middle Ages, ancient Egypt and long ago Atlantis (with an appearance by Arion, Lord of Atlantis). The stories are unexpected and take some unusual turns-and by the end of the last chapter the entire group is dispersed in different eras. It's an entertaining read-and very different from the current version of Rip Hunter.
