"The New 52" version of Time Traveler Rip Hunter is much more gritty than portrayed in the 80's. In the opening scene we see him as a child with his father, who is the superhero we know as Booster Gold. In the next scene he's an adult, in the past, accompanied by Green Lantern and Superman and a young Booster, who has no idea of their future relationship. They see some shipwrecked men who are obviously dying of scurvy and Superman, being Superman, wants to help them. But Rip is adamant that they don't-so they won't change the past. They are all together because they are searching for Bruce Wayne, who has been flung into the past by Darkseid. In fact, Mordecai Wayne, ancestor of Bruce Wayne actually seems to be him.
The majority of the tale takes place in two different alternate realties, one in which Rip encounters Claw the Conqueror and another in which Superman, Green Lantern and Booster encounter Starfire, another character from the 80's. This all messes up the Timescape, especially with the appearance of an evil wizard and a sorceress, not to mention some so-so supervillains.
This is an entertaining enough tale-but they never accomplish their beginning quest-to find Bruce Wayne, which I thought rather odd. This collects issues 1-6 of the mini-series.
