I'm a fan of post-apocalyptic tales, but this is a weird one, even for me. It's all told from the point of view of a young woman named Macy, whose normal life in suburban Minnesota is turned upside down when weird shit starts to happen to the world. The landscape starts to change, with new old buildings and structures. New barbaric people, riding horses, start to take over towns. And animals begin to talk.
Her family is forced into a refugee camp by an invading Scythian army. They escape on a primitive boat into the Mississippi River, but these waterway is a bit different. First of all, it's much deeper, filled with new creatures such as freshwater whales. But her mother had been stung by a wasp, which is believed to carry the horrible plague that has killed a large part of the population. It causes her to grow these boils all over her body, which contain strange fetuses. Later in the book Macy meets one of these "brothers".
The book is entertaining. Not quite funny, more a dictation of a nightmare, really. So if you're looking to read something decidedly different pick this book up.
