This takes place in Marvel's ULTIMATE UNIVERSE, in which familiar heroes are a bit more violent and tarnished. Wolverine meets with the African-American Nick Fury, who runs S.H.I.E.L.D. and is boss to The Ultimates (Avengers). Fury wants Logan to kill the Hulk, who escaped after a nuclear bomb was dropped on him. The Hulk had killed over eight-hundred civilians and is considered way too dangerous to live. Fortunately Fury's people had managed to get a recent fecal sample--which has a human finger in it, so he's able to get the creature's scent.
The story follows what happened to Banner/The Hulk after the explosion, of him going to therapy in France, working in Ireland--and how he eventually makes his way to Tibet, to seek the help of the wisest man of all. He thinks this guy will be able to teach him how to control his anger. When Wolverine finds him it's in a cave in the Himalayas amongst a harem of women. Hulk is rational, at first, speaking like Banner. But when the X-man asks if he can take out Betty Ross since they broke up, the Hulk goes ballistic and the battle begins. In fact, the Hulk rips him in half and hurls his legs eight miles away--and Wolverine has to crawl all the way there to retrieve them. Then, they are joined by another Green Goliath-- She Hulk, who is not who you'd think she'd be.
ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS. THE HULK constantly had me surprised and filled in some
gaps in the Ultimate Universe I was wondering about. I also like how Fury finds out just how much punishment Wolverine can take without being killed, as he converses with is disembodied head! Recommended.
