This amusing time travel book is written by Dave Wolverton, based on an original story by L. Ron Hubbard. Moonshine runner Everett Dumphee, rather than having to spend time in prison for his illegal activity, chooses to join the U.S. Army. Because of his driving skills he's trained as a driver-and is put on a mission transporting a Russian time-travel machine across the country. But along the way the time machine gets jostled and goes off, hurling him back and forth in time, first to the Old West, where he picks up three Indian squaws. Then there are the trips to ancient America, where he has a close call with a pride of sabertooth tigers, to the time of the dinosaurs, and also when the bloodthirsty Mayans ruled the land. This is a bit different from Wolverton's other novels, probably because it's based on someone else's work-and also because this is a comedy. It's like a goofy time-travel road movie, which makes for a very fast and entertaining read.
