The artwork and synopsis on this book make it look akin to an adventure/sci-fi/thriller written by Mathew Reilly or James Rollins, when in truth it has much more in common with those PROPHECY movies starring Christopher Walken.
In Italy, a hidden underwater cave is discovered that contains the bones of some ancient looking creature - which carbon dating says pre-dates the dinosaurs. Paleontologist Carter Cox is contacted by his colleague in Rome studying the find - and it's agreed that the bones are shipped to New York City for more complete study. The two scientists find out, however, that it's not just some fossilized bones. The DNA seems to be 98% the same as in a human, but it's a billion years old, predating most life on the planet. It turns out that a creature is contained within - and it breaks out to roam the Big Apple. It is a fallen angel named Arius - and he wants to procreate, namely with Professor Cox's wife, Beth.
There's also a subplot involving a Jewish man who is translating some ancient scrolls, which talk about these supernatural beings, and with this guy's help Cox tries to protect his wife and defeat the creature.
VIGIL isn't a bad novel - hey, I wouldn't finish a nearly four-hundred page book if I wasn't hooked - but it was different than what I expected, much more smaller in scope and I couldn't help think that it could have been taken in a better direction than the predictable one presented.
