This Alex Cross book is a winner. Author James Patterson isn't called 'one of America's most influential authors' for nothing.VIOLETS ARE BLUE is an all-new story, pitting our psychologist/police officer hero against a possible group of killers that may or may not be...vampires! This is pretty exciting stuff, and the whole 'Goth/vampire subculture' is covered pretty well in this book as Cross searches for the killer or killers. This is pretty eerie stuff, because there are real people out there who drink each other's blood in order to 'live' their lives. There's some creepy suspense and decent gore as the crazies butcher the innocent. Cross teams up with Jamilla Hughes, a female homicide detective based out of California, and the thought of romance enters his life again. Nothing happens directly, but I'm sure it will in the next novel. Also, the subplot of VIOLETS features the serial killer known as the 'Mastermind,' who's been taunting Cross throughout many of the other books in the series. He also goes on his bloodiest rampage yet and seems even more deranged than he was when featured in ROSES ARE RED. The revelation of the Mastermind's identity is strangely kept a 'secret' throughout the entire VIOLETS ARE BLUE book, even though Patterson revealed who he was at the end of ROSES ARE RED.Still, this subplot packs a wallop as the Mastermind makes crazy 'Scream'-like cell phone calls to Cross and butchers his friends for revenge. (He also offed a couple of his female loves in the previous novels, all cops or FBI agents.) The end showdown is awesome, though I don't know how our hero survives an icepick being plunged into (practically) his heart.VIOLETS ARE BLUE boasts lots of action, chases, vampire lore, romance, plenty of scenery changes, and a man trying to balance his work and family life as best as he can. You could do a lot worse than this novel, it passes the time great!
