This prequel story begins at the Sierra Safari zoo in Nevada, which is years after the virus killed the majority of people. A man and his daughter are living there. The daughter is insulting Someone dressed in a red hoodie, who we know is "Bad Ape" from the movie. They are ready to trade a pig to a community nearby and the father wants to bring him along, saying there's safety in numbers. But he has him put on a gas mask so no one knows he's an ape.
In San Francisco, a group of humans are trying to flee the city after the events of DAWN, during the climactic battle of Caesar and Koba. In Florida, two men are hunting apes for bounty because they need live apes for medical research in Atlanta. They are attacked by apes who have come to release their simian prisoners. The oldest ape, the leader, sees the poster that one of the men was holding and points to the road sign leading to Atlanta. And in Atlanta, at a primate research facility, Dr. Sterling is dissecting apes to find out how the virus is mutating. His assistant doesn't want him to kill any more apes.
Back in San Francisco the Colonel has arrived in his ship. Apes report back to Caesar who states "War has arrived". He decides to lead the apes away to a safer place-and sends his son "Blue Eyes" on his own mission, to primarily keep him safe from being killed in a war.
In Oregon, the Colonel kills scientists who have been studying apes because he views them as traitors to the human race. These scientists were in contact with the ones in Atlanta. Dr Serling gets the new strain of the virus, which basically makes him an animal.
Caesar decides to destroy the nearby hydro electric power system so it will keep the humans busy fixing that rather than hunting them. And we find out why the Colonel agrees to keep some apes alive and why those apes are helping him, as we saw in the film. This is an interesting series and has some surprising developments, such as having an Ape leader in George who is as bad as the Colonel, in terms of slaying humans, and an ape saving the life of the Colonel. Plus, we learn how "Bad Ape" got his name and how he was able to survive all the chaos. This mini-series is a good companion piece to the movie. Recommended.
