This continues the tale begun in Vol 1, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where humans live in small tribes, sort of like in a MAD MAX movie. However, there's also these lizard-like mutants called Sand Eaters that want to destroy them, which make for an interesting enemy. The group from the first story had taken refuge in a larger city, but are imprisoned because they follow a different religion, which the city's ruler, Lord Founder, doesn't like. In fact, he shares a lot in common with Michael, the ruin runner who was introduced in the first book. Let's just say they are both far older than what they appear to be.
At first, I thought it a bit confusing in that it goes back and forth between the present and the past when there's no indication of the time change other than the events happening. It's a bit jarring, particularly because all the characters look too much alike. However, once I got used to this style the flashbacks fill in quite a bit about the main characters, particularly Gabi and her relationship with a guy who calls her "Mom".
