Brian Gerard accepts a teaching job in Florida and gets free use of the decaying house of a deceased faculty member. The only problem is that the property is plagued by VERY large spiders, spiders which seem to be growing in size for some mysterious reason. Brian's wife Julie is in a mental institution--and he constantly thinks about when she'll get well, if ever. When one of his students expresses knowledge about spiders in one of his classes, he asks her to come out to his property and take a look at what's crawling around. She's impressed--and wants to study them further. He has no objections...and as time goes by they become involved with each other. Author Scott Baker effectively convey's Gerard's anxiety--about his mentally unstable wife, his job--and this crazy relationship he finds himself in. Not to mention the giant football sized spiders building webs all over the house's property. Are the things he is experiencing real--or are they things he's making up in his mind. Is he the one who is crazy and not his wife? The novel keeps you guessing until the end.
