For those of you unfamiliar with this series, it's over sixty years in the future and Earth has been invaded by creatures from another world. They are the Kurians, psychic vampires who use an assortment of creatures to keep the humans in place. Much of humanity was killed by the plagues they introduced when they first invaded the Earth. While the majority of people live in the Kurian Zones, which are more technologically advanced, there is still resistance. One of these resistance groups is lead by David Valentine, who is now in Kentucky fighting to keep it a free zone. He has gotten the Legworm clans on his side. These people have domesticated these massive caterpillar-like creatures and use them for everything from steeds to food to clothing. However, they must face the Moondaggers, who are ruthlessly loyal to the Kurians.
Valentine is also briefly reunited with his friend Ahn-ka, a golden furred "Grog" who he befriended one of the earlier books, who is leading his own fight against the Kurians as well. Valentine must bring his troops through a blizzard and also the release of a new form of the plague, which has mysteriously spread wherever they have gone. It seems that their is a traitor in their midst but who is it?
I enjoyed this far better than the previous book in the series, primarily because it introduced a new type of creature, this gargoyle like avatar of the octopus-like Kurians.
The author continues to build on this fascinating world, making it one of my favorite ongoing series. If you're looking for a read that will hook you, pick up the first book WAY OF THE WOLF (2003).
