'A Natural History of Skull Island' Author: Weta Workshop with a Foreward by Peter JacksonThis book deals with the formation of 'Skull Island' and the animals that inhabit it, from the biggest predator, the huge V-Rex to the various species of meat-eating parrots. In 1935, a joint expedition of several prominent universities and organizations called Project Legacy was established, it's mission to create several field guides of all the strange life on the island. It was soon discovered that the island was doomed-the geological forces which had created the island are tearing it apart (the Skull Island seen in KING KONG is less than half the size it used to be a thousand years ago)-and it ends up sinking into the ocean depths at the beginning of WWII. This is obviously a nod to what happened to the island in the original KING KONG sequel, SON OF KONG (1935), when the volcanic island sinks. All of the paintings bring this book beautifully to life. There's around 90% more animals in here than seen in the movie, such as the Piranhadon (there is a King Kong toy of him fighting this creature), the Swamp-Wing (a flying amphibian) and Diablosaurus (looks like a rhinoceros). Reading this book is sort of like watching THE FUTURE IS WILD on television, and you temporarily forget that this isn't real. If you enjoyed KING KONG (2005) you'll definitely dig this book.
