This intense graphic novel is an entertaining read, like a cross between LOST and Eddie Romero's BLOOD ISLAND movies from the 70's.
After a weird, prehistoric-looking creature washes up on shore a scientist named Keller goes on a search for the creature's origin point. He takes along two fellow scientists, his assistant and his teenaged daughter. The boat they hire has a suspicious crew, who may or may not turn against them.
When they enter a weird thunderstorm the boat is exploded by lightning and they manage to get in the life raft and eventually make way to the mysterious island. There they encounter weird sucker-faced carnivores, giant insects that have an infectious bite and plant-like humanoids. The island definitely is not "people friendly".
The scientists daughter gets taken by the weird plant creatures and he goes to rescue her with his assistant. The other survivors, including the ship's crew, decide to go their own way, but eventually they all meet up once the secret of this island is revealed.
This graphic novel reads like a dark action-adventure movie, and indeed would make a great movie. What I think is interesting is that artist Greg Scott made all the characters resemble Hollywood actors, from John Cusack to Samuel L. Jackson to Matthew McConaughey to Dwayne "The Rock" Nelson, which made it seem even more like a movie.
If you're a fan of LOST or of simply good storytelling you'll love X ISLE. Highly recommended by this jaded reader.
