- [first lines] Zé do Caixão: What is life? It is the beginning of death. What is death? It is the end of life! What is existence? It is the continuity of blood. What is blood? It is the reason to exist!
Zé do Caixão: [to the crowd at the bar] Ah, I'm going to the crossroads by the graveyard. Anyone wants to follow me?
Zé do Caixão: [to Terezinha, after she bites his lips during an unasked kiss] You have the fangs of a snake and the face of an angel.
Zé do Caixão: A woman who can't bear a child needs no care.
Zé do Caixão: Let's go of the money, man! Zerequiel: [holding the money lost in a game of cards] I can't. I need the money! Zé do Caixão: [stands up] Let go of the money! [broke a bottle and slice off Zerequiel's fingers] Zerequiel: [holding his hand covered in blood] My hand, my hand... Zé do Caixão: As I said: I like brave men! [to everyone] Zé do Caixão: Call the doctor. I'll pay for the bill to. Ah, you're my witnesses: it was an accident.
- With the exception of two exterior scenes, the entire movie was shot inside a 600 square foot studio in São Paulo.
This film was released at a time when Brazil had disbanded their national censorship board and left those decisions to individual states. This film was banned outright in some states and shown, to great success, in others. Some of the censorship committees were less concerned with the portrayal of violence than they were with what they regarded as blasphemy.
Some of the crew were arrested when they were discovered chopping down trees in a park in downtown São Paulo. The trees were being used as part of the set on the soundstage.
Director 'Jose Mojica Marins' played the main role when the original actor quit. He put on his best black suit and added a top hat. He had very long thumb nails so the makeup man added long artificial fingernails to his fingers.
The crew refused to shoot a scene because there wasn't enough sunlight. Director 'Jose Mojica Marins' forced them to shoot the scene by pointing a gun at the cameraman. Various crew members have confirmed the story. On one of the rare occasions when he would respond to questions about the incident, Marins claimed that the gun was only a prop.
