A few days before Christmas, traveling entertainer Marc Stevens is stuck at nightfall in a remote wood in the swampy Hautes Fagnes region of Liege, his van conked out. An odd chap who's looking for a lost dog leads Marc to a shuttered inn; the owner gives Marc a room for the night. Next day, the innkeeper, Mr. Bartel, promises to fix the van, demands that Marc not visit the nearby village, and goes through Marc's things while the entertainer takes a walk. At dinner that night, Bartel laments his wife's having left him, and by next day, Marc is in a nightmare that may not end.

- Some people would kill for company.
- With the exception of the subtle violin tune heard during the final shots and closing credits and the creepy piano play in the bar, the film has no music score.
According to director Fabrice Du Welz there are really only two characters in the film - Marc and Bartel. Welz says that the rest of the people in the film are all some variation of the character of Bartel. Notice how everyone in the film is desperate to be close to Marc, just like crazy Bartel.
The scene where Marc and Bartel talk over dinner was modeled after the conversation scene between Marion Crane and Norman Bates in Hitchcock's Psycho (1960).
Laurent Lucas' audition for the role of Marc lasted 45 minutes as he performed the scene where Marc puts on his show makeup and extended out the scene as though it were a real event.
Welz was reluctant to cast Jackie Berroyer as Paul Bartel, because Berroyer had previously appeared in Welz's short film _Quand on est amoureux c'est merveilleux (1999 short)_ and Welz didn't think Berroyer was right for the role of Bartel. Welz changed his mind after Berroyer's impressive audition and he was cast.
