Cronos (1993) An aging antique dealer, Jesus Gris, happens upon an elegant mechanized scarab. When opened, it painfully stabs whomever is holding it, but the wound brings youthful vigor and a vampire's need for blood. The device is relentlessly pursued by a dying tycoon, Dieter de la Guardia, whose nephew Angel, reluctant to see his uncle live a moment longer, must still do the old man's bidding. Meanwhile, Gris's desires endanger his own granddaughter, Aurora.

Movie Quote(s):
  • Jesus Gris: I am Jesus... Gris... Jesus Gris... Jesus Gris.
  • [to Jesus, who is about to bite her] Aurora Gris: Grandfather.
  • [discussing why Deiter wants the Cronos] Jesus Gris: He thinks it will help him live longer. Angel de la Guardia: [laughs] That fucker does nothing but shit and piss all day, and he wants do live longer?
  • Narrator: [over the opening sequence] In 1536, fleeing from the Inquisition, the alchemist Uberto Fulcanelli disembarked in Veracruz, Mexico. Appointed official watchmaker to the Viceroy, Fulcanelli was determined to perfect an invention which would provide him with the key to eternal life. He was to name it... the Cronos device. 400 years later, one night in 1937, part of the vault in a building collapsed. Among the victims was a man of strange skin, the color of marble in moonlight. His chest mortally pierced, his last words... Suo tempore. This was the alchemist.
Movie Trivia:
  • Mechanical objects and special effects were carried out by Guillermo del Toro's own monster and make up FX company "Necropia" (The company no longer exists, but was functional for 15 years).
  • The film went over budget from the orignal $1,5 million to $2 million (the highest budget for a Mexican movie at the time). del Toro himself got the half million through loans and bank debts. In order to complete the film, changes had to be made, among those changes were Ron Perlman, who agreed to a heavy salary cut. Perlman and del Toro has been good friends ever since, working together frequently.
  • Guillermo del Toro started writing on the script as early as 1984, where it was titled "Vampire of the Grey Dawn".
  • Guillermo del Toro met with Universal in late '93, where they told him they wanted to buy the rights to this film so they could remake it. del Toro's response was "Who wants to see Jack Lemmon lick blood off a bathroom floor?".
  • Director Cameo: [Guillermo del Toro] In the begining of the film, walking a dog in front of Jesús Gris house with his real life wife.
