Enemy Mine (1985) On a far distant planet, at the height of the war between the Dracon and Terran Empires, two military pilots crash in the heat of battle. One is Terran, one is Drac. Each is a repulsive alien to the other. Each is a professional warrior, filled with hatred for his blood enemy. Now, marooned on a hostile world, they have a choice. They can complete their missions in a mutual pact of violence and death. Or they can do the most painful thing any Human or Drac has ever done: reach out and begin the new age of understanding that is struggling to be born.

Movie Quote(s):
  • Davidge: "If one receives evil from another, let one not do evil in return. Rather, let him extend love to the enemy, that love might unite them." I've heard all this before... in the human Taalmaan. Jerry: Of course you have. Truth is truth.
  • Davidge: Where would you be without me, huh? Jerry: Back home.
  • Jerry: It is not longer my life that matters. I am not fat, I am not lazy. Davidge... I await a new life. Davidge: A new life? From where? [Jerry uncovers his abdomen] Davidge: Oh, my God... Oh, my God, are you telling me you're pregnant?
  • [opening narration] Davidge: By late in the 21st century, the nations of the Earth were finally at peace, working together to explore and colonize the distant reaches of space. Unfortunately, we weren't alone out there. A race of non-human aliens called the Dracs were claiming squatters' rights to some of the richest star systems in the galaxy. Well, they weren't going to get it [sic] Davidge: without a fight. Space was the new battleground. For many of us, Earth became a precious memory, light-years away. Our only home was a fortress in space. As in any war, there were long periods with nothing to do but wait. And then...
  • Davidge: You know something, Jerry? Your great Shismar ain't shit! Jerry: [angry] Earthman, your Mickey Mouse is one big stupid dope! [Davidge tries not to laugh]
Movie Trivia:
  • Louis Gossett Jr. said in a TV interview that he had talked while gargling saliva as a kid as one of those kid things. He told the director that he thought that it would add a good touch to his character.
  • The whole film was originally shot in Vestmannaeyjar in Iceland, but original director Richard Loncraine and the producers ran into "creative differences", and the project was shut down. Wolfgang Petersen took over direction and reshot the whole film, with the production moving to Munich.
  • The outside scenes (all the volcanic/lava landscapes and the green lake) were shot in Lanzarote (one of the Canary Islands near Spain), at the Montaņas del Fuego National Park. The rest was filmed at the Bavaria Film Studios, Munich Germany. A few of the sets are still part of their studio tour.
  • Author Barry Longyear reported at a convention that the studio insisted on adding a subplot involving a mine, thinking the audience would not realize that the "Mine" in the title was a possessive (as in "My Enemy") rather than an object.
  • During the opening battle sequence, the computer screen inside the Drac ship is actually displaying the structure of a protein.
